July 3rd, 2024: The lake continues to get lower, conditions worsening. Devil’s River Dam is now exposed. Visibility is effectively zero. Lake Amistad is fed via the Goodenough Spring near buoy 19, the Devil’s River, the Rio Grande and the Pecos River. But with everything at record lows, it will take insane amounts of precipitation to reverse the trend.
The end result is we have extremely low lake levels and a lot of particulates concentrated in smaller areas, contributing to the horrible visibility. Air temps have routinely been at or above 100 degrees for the past couple of months, which means the lake temps have been hanging in the 80s. A very slight, but noticeable thermocline sits at about 45 feet. If you do choose to dive, a 3mm shorty is certainly adequate. Again, with visibility being this bad, we strongly encourage making sure your navigation and communication skills are top notch.
